Rock legend Mick Jagger listed Jamaican dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel and American hip-hop mogul Jay-Z as his two favourite “rappers” in a Twitter Question and Answer session this week.
The Rolling Stones lead singer noted Vybz Kartel’s dancehall appeal as the reason he admires the incarcerated deejay’s music.
“My favorite rappers are Vybz (Kartel), I like him, and I guess Jay Z,” Jagger said.
“One is very different from the other,” Jagger continued, noting that “Jay Z’s got this whole body of work and he’s put himself together with great tunes as well. And Vybz is just completely mad dancehall and totally different. It’s very difficult to understand a word he says until you’ve heard it about 100 times.”
Kartel’s soundbites, witty flick-offs and game-changing songs have entertained dancehall fans for over a decade.
He is now serving life imprisonment for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams and will not be eligible for parole for 35 years. However, despite his incarceration, the deejay still dominates the airwaves in Jamaica with several hit songs.
